Showbiz Christchurch appointed Michael Bayly as its new General Manager in May 2015. Michael has brought a broad and nuanced background to the position, reflecting the diverse needs of the role.
Michael graduated with degrees in visual and performing Arts from Auckland University, which led to a career as an actor/ singer touring Australia and New Zealand in large scale musicals and Opera’s. Michael settled in Christchurch in the early 2000’s and transitioned to a business management career in wine and spirits, advancing to the senior South Island Management role with New Zealand’s largest wine and spirit portfolio, Hancocks. Michael managed all aspects of the South Island operation, driving a significant period of expansion and growth. Arts alignments and cultural sponsorships were a tool that Michael utilised to drive Hancock’s business forward successfully, and as such he developed a network of mutually beneficial brand and Arts relationships that provide a framework for the current and future success of Showbiz. Michael is enjoying successfully taking Showbiz forward to a secure future at the heart of a dynamic new Arts community in Canterbury and nationally.
As Christchurch’s foremost producer of musical theatre, Showbiz Christchurch has enjoyed significant success since the reopening of the Isaac Theatre Royal in Nov 2014. Since staging the first major musical in the newly rebuilt theatre with The Phantom of The Opera in April 2015 to the end of 2017, Showbiz enjoyed attendances of more than 110,000 patrons to see their critically acclaimed shows. 2018 is shaping up to be a watershed year, commencing with the New Zealand theatre company premiere of Wicked in April.
